DIY Bow:) 11/06/2010

Niamh is going to her first “boy and girl” party on Sunday...Well, it’s actually a bunch of second graders going to a movie, but she is really excited.  He is her good friend; and she told me that I cannot sit next to her for this one movie;)...

I thought it would be cute to put her hair up in a pretty pony and top it off with a tomboy sort of bow...but, good luck to me finding one in a store!...They are all girlyJ!  So, here is a fun little project—might take you 25 minutes...and you’ll end up with any themed bow you can imagine.  Just find your favorite scrap material and a couple ribbon wheels you’ve got laying around...And TAAADAAAJ You’ve got yourself and your little princess a nice, unique bow for any occasion!

Like I said, I wanted a tomboy bow...but Niamh is all girl, so I added a little pink and a pretty charm to my materials...You can substitute craft flowers, pearls, anything really for your own.  Here are the things I needed:
Picture
A rectangular piece of scrap fabric...you can decide what size suits you best.  Mine was about 8” by 5”.

Iron, scissors, really good glue, hair clip, some ribbon, and sewing thread/needle (or cheat and use your machine like me;)

Start with the fabric long ways and fold sides up to meet in the middle.  Iron.

Fold short sides to meet in the middle.  Iron.

Now scrunch it together to see what size loop you need to sew to slide over the bow for the middle “knot.”  Sew the loop and sew down the middle of your bow to keep it nice and tight once it’s through the loop.

Slide your “knot” on.  I added a bow in my football print ribbon underneath and dabbed a bit of glue to keep it from sliding out.

Here is where I tried to girly it up for NiamhJ.  I added one of my characters on a shrink paper charm...The girl going to a football game checking her lip gloss, cuz that is SO Niamh!  It is secured with a pink ribbon.

Almost thereJ...Flip it over and glue on your hair clip.

If you need a little present topper for a gift this year, and don’t really want to spend any more money, add the clip to a heavy cardstock paper and make your gift tag out of itJ!  It’s such a cute way to top a present and show you put a lot of thought into every detail!

And the finished productJ...Niamhy loved it.  But she still holds the football like a babydollJ.
