I got the new Urban Outfitters catalogue in the mail this week.  If I’m honest, UO catalogues either freak me out or convince me all over again that I am in love with this brand.  They are artsy...maybe a little weird sometimes...but here and there, they take top spot on my “Never Throw This Magazine Away” list.  December’s issue is kind of like a glimpse into a backwoods, hippie holiday love fest...and anything with backwoods, hippie, or holiday—well, that’s gonna turn my head.  I realized over the past two days that working on my artwork and orders has sort of turned me into a fashion nightmare.  I mean, if what you envision is a mess of leggings, sweatshirts, and frizzy, fly-away hair—well sweetie, you’ve pretty much nailed itJ.  So, I’ve been turning through the pages of my UO mag and getting some inspiration—for outfits and artwork.  Here are two girls that will appear in artwork somewhere in the future....maybe not exactly them, but I love formulating some ideas based off these two pretty pics.  Can’t say I’d ever wear my bra out to play tennis...and I could never pull off the lacey skirt with flats (I wasn’t blessed with skinny legs, no matter how I’ve tried to obtain them—they have eluded me my whole life)...But, I love the pieces separately...and I think the girls look so serene and feminine.

I love looking at other artists’ fashion illustrations.  Whether it’s on FLICKR or illustrationweb.com or even browsing ETSY artists, everyone has their own individual style and interpretation of clothing and the human figure.  My favorite fashion illustrator is Nuno Dacosta.  I love his faces.  They are so beautiful and other-worldly.  And he captures movement so well it feels like the girl is walking across the page.  I wish I could have an hour art lesson with himJ...

Well, I have vowed to get out of these horrid black leggings tomorrowJ...I am changing the banner of my Etsy shop (well...another Etsy seller is doing it for me, actually)...and wanted a little character that resembled me...I almost instinctually drew her in sweats and a messy bunJ...That’s when I really got annoyed!!...HAHAHA...Here she is—dressing like I normally doJ...A little black and white (and canary yellow;) sketch of  Krista.  JJJ

Holiday Red... 10/29/2010

One of my favorite parts of the holiday season is planning pretty things to wear to holiday parties and dinners.   Mostly, we have family get togethers, but there is the occasional dress-up event that is really exciting to plan an outfit for.  I really love a look that feels soft and lightweight, yet still looks wintery—something like a quiet snowfall...But, it’s hard to strike a balance between delicate and wintery...Especially if you’re a naturally cold person (like myself)!!...I’ve put together a pretty holiday outfit that should keep a girl warm, yet feeling girly and even a bit magicalJ.

Recently, I saw this red on red tights/shoes combo in Lucky magazine’s November issue.  Maybe a little scary at first;), but with the right outfit on top, can look quite festive and elegant!  The outfit keeps two of my favorite things wearable in the winter season as well—lace and white...And with the punch of red and a big emerald ring, you can look Christmas-y (not a word, I know;) while not straying into that whole red and green outfit horror showJ.  A lacey slip, body hugging sweater dress, and neutral colored coat are the perfect subtle topping to cherry colored legs...

I am a fashion fanatic...I could spend an entire day just browsing through fashion mags and looking at new clothing in my favorite online stores.  I can’t get enough of itJ.  My favorite show right now is Rachael Zoe’s on Bravo (oh, to have her style me just for a dayJ !!

I integrate a lot of my love for fashion into my drawings and illustrations.  From ruffles to scrunchy socks, one of my favorite parts of drawing out a character is adding their sense of style.  I’ve always been the girl who isn’t afraid of looking ridiculous to try out a particular outfit (and believe me, I’ve seen my share of ridiculous outfits
J) ...there are pieces and trends that, no matter how many years go by, I am still going to lean towards...and my characters tend to reflect my tastes, however great or ridiculous they may be!

One thing I can’t seem to get away from are my characters’ boots...and people have called them everything from legwarmers to boots—which is fine by me...(I have a particular affinity to legwarmers myself...and if my husband would not die of embarrassment, I’d wear them out of the house much more often:D)...But, to set the record straight, they are boots
J...I am adddddiiiiccctttedddd to boots; and once fall rolls around, I find every excuse to add a new pair (or two, or three...ssshhh!! don’t tell philJ) to my collection.

So, my character boots are sort of, I guess, different...Kind of chunky and slouchy...and sometimes, admittedly, overdone
J...But they are my idea of the perfect boot.  It started with my dad’s old hunting boots...They folded over (when they weren’t pulled all the way up to protect the whole leg from mud and water) and came to about my knee.  I’d put them on when it was snowy to feed the dog...and I just loved them (HA, it sounds so funny, but it’s true)...Their proportions were great...made my legs look a bit more skinny...could accommodate tucking jeans into—they were just perfect, except for the fact that they were way too big and were, well, hunting bootsJ...

About two years ago, I stumbled upon (this was truly my most glorious boot moment ever!
J) a pair of boots that reminded me of those old hunting boots.  Gwen Stefani L.A.M.B. boots.  I waited months before buying them (they weren’t cheap!)...and-- oh ... my ... gosh!!...BA-NANAS!! (as Rachel Zoe would put it;)...They were everything I’d ever hoped for in a pair of bootsJ...I bought them in black...Then tan...Then tan again (those ones are still in the box.  Saving them till I’m like 60, so I can always have a pairJ!!)  They are my favorites forever...Thank you Gwen!:)

So, now readers will know what those big slouchy concoctions are on the feet of my girls
J...And please let me know (at any time of the day or night!) if you ever stumble upon a pair of fabulous boots...I will forever thank you!!:)

Here’s some of my personal favorites from my closet
J...

These are a boot-clog combination from Free People.  They are the hardest boot to get on, but amazing once you can actually say your foot is in themJ...

Picture
These little booties reminded me of victorian times...and also of a boot that maybe the Wicked Witch of the West would wearJ...and, since she’s my girl crush, I bought them (on sale) from AnthroJ!!

Picture
My latest boot purchase...got these in the mail the other day from AlloyJ...I’m really into that burnt orange color for fall, and thought these were pretty and edgy.

Drum roll, pleaseJ...My LAMB boots...best ever...Love, Love, LOVE!

And, the boots I’m wearing nowJ...My trusty old sweater boots.  I only wear them in the house.  Think I have found a way to wear boots 24/7J.
